We live in Hochelaga.
It’s towards the east of Montréal and is a cool area that’s developing a lot from it’s more dodgy & somewhat seedy past. It reminds me of some areas in East London where the artists & creatives moved to (because it was cheap) and where over the years, nice little cafés, bars with craft beer, specialist shops and cool restaurants have popped up, changing the vibe & increasing interest in the area.
In a few years it’ll be interesting to see how things will be different, but for now there’s still a lot of room to grow. As more small businesses & entrepreneurs invest in the area, making the most of the vacant shop spaces, and creatives put on fun shows and events, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve could grow into a pretty vibrant district. It’s also one of the more francophone areas of Montréal island which is great, especially as it has helped me learn French..or at least use & hear it daily, some way or another, since I arrived.
Anyway, as a way to discover more about Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and make friends in the area, we have a Meetup group called GoHoma that meets a few times a month-ish. So far, everyone has been lovely and it’s nice to gain a sense of community by meeting up with our ‘neighbours’, whether it’s for a beer, to watch hockey, have a picnic or go bowling. If you live nearby, then do join us.
It’s a very relaxed group & is a way to hang out with nice people doing fun things, locally..
